Pearls are often associated with perfect spheres, soft lustre and timeless elegance. But nature rarely follows a perfect template.

Some of the most fascinating pearls are irregular, baroque and highly unusual in shape. Even more intriguing are pearls whose natural structures have later been modified to improve their durability or appearance.

A recent case examined by the GIA laboratory in Mumbai demonstrates exactly how complex that relationship can become.

Four unusual pearls were identified as filled natural hollow saltwater pearls, each displaying a striking heart-like shape. Their unusual appearance was accompanied by an equally unusual scientific characteristic: a distinct red X-ray fluorescence.

The result is a fascinating example of how natural gemstone formation, human intervention and advanced gemological testing can intersect in a single object.

What Makes These Heart-Shaped Pearls So Unusual?

The four pearls were part of a parcel of loose white to light cream baroque pearls submitted to GIA's Mumbai laboratory.

Four specimens immediately stood out because of their unusual heart-like forms and red X-ray fluorescence.

They ranged from approximately 22.47 × 22.00 × 15.73 mm to 35.46 × 27.27 × 24.22 mm, with weights ranging from 34.30 to 98.53 carats.

Those are substantial pearls.

But their size was not the only reason they attracted attention.

The pearls appeared worn and fragile, with extensive cracks, grooves and areas that had been plugged. Under magnification, gemologists discovered that portions of the surfaces had been sealed with pieces of shell and a yellowish-brown resinous adhesive.

In other words, these were not simply unusual natural pearls.

They were natural pearls that had subsequently undergone significant human intervention.

Natural Does Not Always Mean Untouched

One of the most important distinctions in pearl identification is the difference between natural formation and lack of treatment.

GIA defines natural pearls as pearls that form within a mollusk without human intervention. Cultured pearls, by contrast, are produced through deliberate human involvement in the growth process.

That means a pearl can be naturally formed and still undergo treatment after it has been recovered.

This is exactly what makes the four heart-shaped specimens so interesting.

Their internal structures and growth patterns indicated natural formation, but their cavities had subsequently been filled and sealed.

For collectors, this distinction matters. A natural origin does not automatically mean that a pearl has remained completely untouched throughout its history.

 


 

The Hidden Cavities Inside the Pearls

The most revealing evidence came from real-time X-ray microradiography (RTX) and X-ray computed microtomography (μ-CT).

These techniques allowed researchers to look inside the pearls without simply cutting them open.

The scans revealed large internal cavities containing foreign materials with radiopacity similar to the surrounding nacre.

Researchers could also see:

  • Rectangular fragments used as filler material

  • Tabular fragments of different sizes

  • Pieces of cut shell used to seal openings

  • Large cavities following the external contours of the pearls

This is where advanced gemological imaging becomes particularly valuable.

A pearl can appear relatively ordinary from the outside while its internal structure tells a completely different story.

GIA identifies X-ray radiography as one of the most important non-destructive methods for determining whether a pearl is natural or cultured because it reveals internal growth structures. In more complex cases, micro-CT can provide three-dimensional information about cavities, growth layers and structural anomalies.

For these four specimens, that internal evidence helped confirm their natural formation despite the extensive modifications.

Why Were the Pearls Filled?

The cavities were not simply an unusual feature of the natural pearls.

They had been deliberately addressed.

The pearls showed evidence of:

  • Cavity filling

  • Shell plugging

  • Resinous adhesive

  • Surface working around the plugged areas

The apparent purpose was to improve the pearls' structural integrity and durability.

Natural hollow pearls can be fragile because their internal voids and thin areas leave them vulnerable to damage. Filling those cavities and sealing openings can make the material more robust and easier to handle.

However, the treatment also becomes part of the pearl's identity and history.

This is an important consideration for collectors: natural origin and treatment history should be evaluated separately.

 


 

The Heart Shape: Nature or Human Modification?

The heart-like shape is perhaps the most visually captivating feature of the specimens.

Yet the shape also introduces an important question.

Were these originally formed as heart-shaped pearls?

Or were they modified after formation?

The GIA examination could establish that the overall shape, external appearance and internal structures were consistent with natural formation, but the unusual shape and the modifications around certain areas created some uncertainty about whether the specimens should be considered whole pearls or blister pearls.

That uncertainty is precisely why careful gemological analysis matters.

A distinctive outline alone cannot tell the complete story.

The internal growth structure provides another layer of evidence.

 


 

Reading a Pearl's Growth History

One of the strongest indicators of natural formation in these specimens was the growth arc pattern in the surrounding nacre.

Nacre is deposited layer by layer during pearl formation, creating structures that can preserve information about how the pearl developed inside the mollusk.

These growth structures can be invisible to the naked eye but highly informative under advanced imaging.

This is one reason unusual pearls should not be judged solely by their exterior appearance.

A perfectly symmetrical pearl is not necessarily more scientifically interesting than an irregular one.

Sometimes, the imperfections reveal the story.

 


 

An Unexpected Red X-Ray Fluorescence

Perhaps the most unusual scientific feature of these four pearls was their red X-ray fluorescence.

All four showed red emission under X-ray fluorescence, although the intensity varied between specimens.

This is unusual because most saltwater pearls are inert under X-ray fluorescence.

Energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy also found:

  • Manganese below detection limits

  • Strontium concentrations between 790 and 1,297 ppm

The strontium levels supported a saltwater origin.

The researchers suggested that the unusual red X-ray fluorescence could potentially be associated with the unidentified material used inside the filled cavities.

Importantly, however, the exact cause of the red reaction was not established.

That distinction is worth emphasising: the unusual fluorescence is an observation, while its possible connection to the filler remains an interpretation rather than a confirmed identification.

 


 

What Happened Under UV Light?

The pearls also showed different reactions under ultraviolet radiation.

Under long-wave UV, they exhibited a moderate bluish reaction.

Under short-wave UV, they were inert.

These observations provided another piece of the identification puzzle.

Gemologists routinely use different forms of illumination and spectroscopy to investigate pearls because no single observation necessarily provides a complete answer.

GIA's current pearl-analysis methodology combines visual examination with techniques including X-ray radiography and fluorescence spectroscopy to establish identity, origin and treatment characteristics.

 


 

Why Natural Pearls Are So Special

Natural pearls occupy a special position in the jewellery world because they form without deliberate human intervention.

Today, most pearls available in the jewellery market are cultured, while natural pearls are exceptionally rare. GIA notes that most natural pearls encountered in today's market are antique.

Their appeal therefore extends beyond appearance.

Collectors may value:

  • Natural origin

  • Unusual shape

  • Exceptional size

  • Surface character

  • Lustre

  • Provenance

  • Historical associations

  • Rarity

For baroque natural pearls, irregularity itself can become part of the beauty.

The four heart-shaped specimens demonstrate this perfectly. Their shapes are not the result of a conventional jewellery design process. Instead, they represent an unusual interaction between natural growth and subsequent craftsmanship.

What Should Buyers Look For When Purchasing Unusual Pearls?

If a pearl has an unusual shape, substantial size or an exceptional colour, it is worth looking beyond the surface.

Ask about:

1. Natural or Cultured Origin

This is fundamental.

Natural pearls and cultured pearls are both genuine pearls, but their origins are completely different. GIA recommends advanced examination, including X-ray analysis, when determining pearl origin.

2. Treatment History

Unusual pearls may have undergone filling, bleaching, polishing, coating or other forms of modification.

Treatment does not necessarily make a pearl undesirable, but it should be understood and properly disclosed.

3. Internal Structure

For rare or valuable pearls, advanced imaging can reveal information that cannot be determined from the exterior alone.

4. Surface and Durability

Cracks, grooves, cavities and repaired areas can affect long-term durability.

Natural pearls are organic gemstones and require more thoughtful handling than many crystalline gems.

Even when a pearl has been structurally reinforced, unnecessary exposure to harsh chemicals, heat or rough surfaces should be avoided.

GIA recommends keeping pearls away from perfumes, hairspray, cleaning products and abrasive objects, wiping them after wear and storing them in a soft pouch or case.

For unusually fragile or modified pearls, professional inspection is particularly worthwhile.
